Dr. Christian Macías Argüello is a 25-year-old general practitioner in Guayaquil (Ecuador). He graduated from the Catholic University of Santiago de Guayaquil in May 2018 and currently works for the Ministry of Public Health of Ecuador and in clinical practice in the Medical Simulation Hospital of the School of medicine at the San Francisco University of Quito. His research focuses on poisoning and adverse effects in children under the age of 1 year from the consumption of infusions made from plants typical of his region like Anise, which is used with carminative purpose in rural areas. He highlights that some of the harmful effects are not only gastrointestinal but neurological as well. He believes that Practicum Script offers the advantage of time since it allows him to study in his spare time.

I have recently graduated, and the Practicum Script cases gave me the opportunity to expand my medical perspective on different clinical cases that may be found in the emergency room or in private practice. Cardiovascular risk in my region is very high due to poor diet, with high consumption of saturated fat, and manifesting in patients with high BMI and circulatory and vascular problems.

Can you comment on any Practicum Script cases that you saw reflected in your health care practice?

We see hypertensive patients every day in our medical practice. That is why Practicum Script is a very helpful tool; it increases logical reasoning and facilitates medical decision making.
If experience is a degree, does case simulation pave the way?
Medical simulation allows us to improve reasoning without harming patients; if we do well, we improve, and if we fail, we learn for a better future in clinical practice.

How do you deal with doubt and dilemmatic situations?

Solution for problems involving doubt and dilemmatic situations depend on the search of several options based on the theory and data presented. I then analyze these options in the medical context, trying to obtain a positive result for the patient before making a decision. One must always keep calm when facing problems.

What are the advantages of the training course that you have just completed?

The biggest advantage is time. With this methodology, you can study at your own pace. This benefits learning for those professionals who always look for the best conditions, by removing factors such as hunger, fatigue, and sleep, which interfere with other methodologies.

Would you recommend the course to a colleague?

I would recommend it without hesitation; the course is excellent!
