To think fast is generally positive; what you should not do is to rush

"As a physician, I graduated from the National University of Rosario (Argentina). I’ve been a cardiologist since 1997, and an emergency medical specialist since 2010. I currently work in the private and public settings at the Juan Bautista Alberdi Hospital in Rosario." This is how Dr. Silvina Galetto describes her professional trajectory. An active user of Practicum Script, she had taken two courses when [Practicum] was launched along with the Argentine Federation of Cardiology. She is especially grateful for "the dilemmatic approach" of the clinical reasoning training program.

 

Tell me about your day-to-day as a specialist in Clinical Cardiology and Emergency.

My activity requires many hours of work, which sometimes is a heavy burden. However, I face all the challenges with the most significant dedication that I can, working as a team, and using the educational tools that I have access to. 

Have you found these 30 Practicum Script cases useful in your healthcare practice in Rosario?
These cases are very useful for agile medical reasoning and for maintaining information up-to-date. In particular, I would add to the dilemmatic approach, the experience based on my work environment.

You know that debate and uncertainty are the basis of our approach. How do you deal with dilemmatic situations?
First and foremost, I determine the urgency of the case, and then I select the means and/or people with whom to consult and debate.

Is thinking fast a mistake or a sign of going in the right direction? Is that intuition?

I am impressed by the individual quality of each person of not being influenced by patterns based on experience. Thinking fast can be a good choice or an error, depending on the case we are facing and on the patient and his or her clinical presentation. I think that, in general, it is positive. What you should not do is to rush.

The meaningful learning theory is based on the fact that the student already has knowledge and emphasizes the importance of building up conceptual networks. Do you consider Practicum Script effective in this task?

Practicum Script is effective in the task of reaffirming concepts, adding new knowledge and facilitating medical debate.

For me, the program is very interesting, since it allows me to sharpen my interrogation and direct it more towards a specific pathology and to have more knowledge of laboratory and cabinet exams.
